Present and Future of Supercapacitor Technology Applied to Powertrains, Renewable Generation and Grid Connection Applications

Energy storage systems (ESS) are becoming essential as a solution for troublesome industrial systems. This study focuses on the application of type ESS, high-power technology known in literature supercapacitors or electric double layer capacitors (EDLC). has had huge impact during last decade research related to traction drives, renewable sources and powergrids. Related this aspect, paper summarizes most relevant scientific publications five years that use supercapacitor (SCs) applications (drives rail vehicles drives road vehicles), generation energy (wind, solar wave energy), connection grid (voltage frequency regulation microgrids). The based EDLC practical aspects must be taken into account op-eration these briefly described. For each aforementioned applications, it is described how problems solved by using technology, drawing solutions proposed different authors. Special attention paid control strategies when combining SCs with other technologies, such batteries. As summary, some conclusions collected drawn from analyzed, evaluating which necessary conduct further order facilitate integration technology.
